Mitsu was established in 1991 for manufacturing agrochemicals and intermediates and achieved global prominence for its mastery of chiral chemistry. With in-house R&D it produced some of the most complex molecules of crop protection chemicals. In 1999, Mitsu entered into a joint venture with Hoechst Schering Agrevo (which was subsequently acquired by Aventis and is now Bayer CropScience, the world leader in crop protection in the synthetic pyrethroid segment of pesticides).
The joint venture, christened Bilag, is the world's largest producer of synthetic pyrethroids with a sales turnover of about Rs. 5091 million (FY2006) and one of the biggest manufacturers and exporters of agrochemicals from India. Bilag has received numerous awards for export, safety and environment protection.
